Volkswagen to probably offer XL1 only as a lease

Volkswagen will most likely offer the frugal XL1 only as a lease.

The XL1 made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year and since then we haven't heard anything about VW's most economical model ever made. In an interview give to Autoblog Green, VW of America's manager of product and technology communications, Mark Gillies, said the car "will most likely be a lease scheme." The first batch of XL1s will consist of 50 cars and after that Volkswagen will build additional units if there is demand.

The XL1 makes use of a two-cylinder 800cc TDI engine rated at 47 bhp (35 kW) and an electric motor with 27 bhp (20 kW). It comes with a 5.5 kWh battery pack and can return an incredible 261 mpg US (313 mpg UK or 0.9 liters / 100 km) with CO2 emissions of only 21 g/km.
