Volkswagen has announced plans to offer a carbon fiber roof option for high-performance Golf models.

According to Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg who is the firm's research and development boss, the carbon fiber roof will lower the curb weight of the car by 18 - 20 lbs (8.16 kg - 9.07 kg). He says the most difficult task on the agenda today is to create a set of waterproof joints for sealing the Golf's roof to the body sides and to the windshield.

Unfortunately, there aren't any details about a launch date or the price tag of this optional feature. We can only assume the GTI and GTD versions of the Golf VII are going to receive the carbon fiber roof.
