Next-gen BMW 1-Series might not make it stateside

The next generation of the BMW 1-Series might not reach U.S. territory, depending on a variety of reasons.

Since it's manufactured in Europe, exporting the 1-Series to United States is expensive for BMW and there's also the risk of overlapping with the MINI lineup. In addition, current prices of the 1-Series are not that far from the 3-Series, but both Audi and Mercedes-Benz will offer small models priced at less than 30,000 USD.

BMW will wait and see how the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA will be doing in the U.S. in terms of sales and then make the final decision. The firm's chief of product planning and strategy for North America, Paul Ferraiolo, told Car and Driver "we're going to watch that" in reference to CLA and A3. He added the company is working on taking advantage of the sub 30,000 USD market.
