Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed he has talked to Google about the potential of using their autonomous driving system.

Calling autonomous driving systems "a logical step in the evolution of cars," Musk sees great potential in the technology as long as it can overcome several key obstacles. As he explained, "The problem with Google’s current approach is that the sensor system is too expensive. It’s better to have an optical system, basically cameras with software that is able to figure out what’s going on just by looking at things."

Since Google appears to be committed to their high-tech approach, Musk says Tesla will likely develop their own autonomous driving system. However, he didn't rule out the possibility of working with Google.

Google is pushing to get the technology into the hands of customers as soon as possible, but Musk doesn't think it's a priority because he's more concerned about getting consumers to adopt sustainable vehicles like the Model S.
