Maserati just dipped their toes into the diesel waters by announcing the Ghibli will be offered with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, but a more powerful engine could be in the works according to a recent report.

Car & Driver says Fiat is developing a 4.0-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine that could develop 365 HP (268 kW) and 622 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque. For comparison, the 3.0-liter V6 churns out 275 HP (202 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque.

The engine will reportedly feature direction injection and Multijet technology. This could enable the mill to return at least 30 mpg US (36 mpg UK / 7.8 L/100km).

If the engine is approved for production it could be launched in 2016 and be offered internationally.
