Porsche has confirmed rumors about preparing a four-cylinder engine but this won't be out until 2016.

Yesterday we heard a rumor about Porsche working on a flat-four engine for the Boxster/Cayman due later this year. The rumor is half true as such an engine has been confirmed, however, "it is still in an early development phase. On current planning, it will be another three years at least before we will be ready to reveal anything official on this subject", according to a Porsche official who added "is not due before 2016."

The direct-injection, four-cylinder turbocharged engine will borrow the architecture of the existing six-cylinder unit and will power the facelifted Boxster and Cayman models which will go on sale in 2016.

Before that, Porsche will take 2.0-liter gasoline and diesel turbocharged engines from Volkswagen for the Macan which will probably be unveiled this September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
