The next generation of the XC90 is going to be Volvo's first ever model developed in collaboration with China's Geely who owns the Swedish marque.

Confirmed for a late 2014 launch, the new XC90 will ride on a new luxury platform which is being engineered at home in Sweden and will also be used on future models like the flagship S80. This platform is known as Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and can work with a wide array of powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid setup.

Volvo is also working with Geely on a more compact platform for smaller models. Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson said some of these new models will be manufactured at a new Volvo factory located in Chengdu, China. He added they are analyzing the prospects of launching smaller subcompact models, like Mercedes-Benz and BMW have been doing recently. Samuelsson said these new models will also be developed with Geely.
