BMW has announced the production version of the i3 will be shown for the first time in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Scheduled to go on sale before the end of the year in Europe, U.S. and China, the BMW i3 will be available right from the start with a range-extending engine. It should allow the car to provide a range of up to 186 miles (300 km), while only on electric power the car will do between 80 miles (129 km) and 100 miles (161 km). It is believed the range-extender is a two-cylinder gasoline power unit borrowed from the company's Motorrad (motorcycle) division.

BMW declared during the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month buyers of the i3 will have the possibility of renting a conventional-powered BMW when they have to take trips longer than the car's range. However, they didn't say anything about pricing but chances are some discounts will be available for a defined number of days.

The 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show will kick off on September 10 for the press and on 14 for the public.
