Volkswagen is investigating whether it's feasible to launch a production version of the CrossBlue Concept.

VW board member for product development Ulrich Hackenberg said the German automaker is contacting dealers and customers to figure out potential sales of this large seven-seat SUV and see if they should put it into production. Michael Macht who is a board member for production stated "right now, the cost is a little too high" but costs can go down once the business case is being refined.

Macht added that such a model would be built in Chattanooga or Mexico, with the possibility of setting up a new plant in the United States depending on the local available subsidies. Canada is not an option because it's too far from Volkswagen's supply base, according to Macht.

A production variant of the CrossBlue could represent an important model in Volkswagen's objective to double sales in the United States to 800,000 cars by 2018.

Last week Volkswagen confirmed opening a minimum of ten new factories in the following years, with seven of them based in China.
