On the eve of the Geneva Motor Show, the Volkswagen Golf VII has been named the 2013 European Car of the Year.

Described as a "clear winner," the panel of 58 automotive journalists were impressed by the Golf's "outstanding achievements in safety, fuel efficiency, dynamics and comfort." As a result, the Golf earned 414 points which easily put it ahead of its nearest rivals the Toyota GT 86 / Subaru BRZ (202 points) and Volvo V40 (189 points).

The Volkswagen Golf joins the Renault Clio as the only models to have been named the European Car of the Year twice.
