The big three have always toyed with the idea of introducing a half-ton pickup with a diesel engine, but Ram has finally announced plans to launch a production model.

Set to go on sale in the third-quarter of 2013, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will have a small-displacement diesel engine sourced from VM Motori. The company declined to release specifications, but said the engine will displace 3.0-liters and be connected to an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. It promises to deliver best-in-class fuel efficiency as well as class-leading torque.

According to Ram Truck President Fred Diaz, “The half-ton truck market is incredibly competitive, and although we’re honored the Ram 1500 has received a number of prestigious awards, we cannot rest on what we have accomplished, we must keep pushing.”
