VW has confirmed today it will build the seventh-gen Golf in Puebla starting with Q1 2014. It will be sold in North and South America.
With this decision Volkswagen aims for an increased market share in North America for the Golf which hasn't been doing so well compared to its global competitors. It is part of a plan to invest 5 billion USD in the next three years in North America as growth is very important to CEO Martin Winterkorn's plan to become the biggest car manufacturer in the world by 2018.
Thanks to switching Golf production to Mexico, Volkswagen will take advantage of lower labor costs and protect themselves against the dollar/euro unfavorable currency fluctuations. At the Puebla plant they also make the Beetle, Jetta and sixth-gen Golf estate.
To meet strong demand, VW will add extra shifts in Wolfsburg to keep up with more than 100,000 orders received so far.
