Several patent photos showing the next generation of the Nissan X-Trail have surfaced the Internet.

Set to go on sale sometime next year, the new X-Trail looks a lot like the Hi-Cross Concept unveiled by Nissan at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. If these patent drawings turn out to be real, the X-Trail will lose its boxy look and adopt a considerably more attractive design. Some reports are indicating Nissan will offer the new model with a third-row seating option.

With a 2780mm (109.4 inches) wheelbase, the concept was 4660mm (183.4 inches) long, 1850mm (72.8 inches) wide and 1670mm (65.7 inches) tall. It featured a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor working together to offer just about the same performance as a 2.5-liter unit. The Hi-Cross also had the firm's XTRONIC continuously variable transmission and offered both FWD and AWD driving modes.

The 2014 Nissan X-Trail will probably arrive in March at the Geneva show.
