Fiat's global brand chief Olivier Francois said that the 500e will not be available for the European market.

The electric version of the Fiat 500 city car is scheduled for a Q2 2013 release in California, followed by other states in the U.S. that mandate sales of EVs. Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said that for each unit the firm will lose between 8,000 and 10,000 USD.

The only reason why Fiat is making this car is to comply with regulatory demands in some U.S. states to encourage sales of zero-emission cars. The 500e is expected to have a starting price of approximately 35,000 USD.

As you would imagine, EVs are far from being popular in the United States where in the first nine months of the year only 26,000 cars were sold, out of a total of 11,9M vehicles. California accounts for about 10 percent of all EV sales and so far 2,618 cars were sold in the sunny state.
