BMW 116d EfficientDynamics returns 103 mpg UK during RAC Future Car Challenge

A BMW 116d EfficientDynamics returned 103 mpg UK (85.7 mpg US or 2.7 liters / 100 km) during the RAC Future Car Challenge 2012.

It managed to win the Best Internal Combustion Engine class after completing the 64-mile route from Brighton to London. Despite the challenging route with many miles of uphill section and busy traffic, the five-door hatchback recorded a 39 percent mpg improvement compared to the official 74.3 mpg UK (61.8 mpg US or 3.8 liters / 100 km) combined economy figure.

The vehicle is powered by a 1.6-liter, inline-four turbocharged diesel engine with 116 hp (86 kW) and 191 lb-ft (260 Nm) of torque. Power is sent to rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission, enabling the car to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 10.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 121 mph (195 km/h).

Fuel-saving technologies include aerodynamic upgrades and low-rolling resistance tires that also helped lower CO2 emissions to only 99 g/km.

Additional details are provided in the attached press release.
