In an effort to reverse declining sales and sagging consumer interest, Lincoln will reportedly abandon dreams of a flagship and focus on mainstream models instead.

Sources familiar with the matter have revealed Lincoln won't build niche vehicles, but rather develop high-volume models that offer a bigger return on investment.

The first model created under the strategy is the 2013 MKZ, which goes on sale this fall. It will be followed by a crossover, which is tentatively called the MKC, in 2014 or 2015. Expected to be based on the Ford Escape / Kuga, the model will slot below the MKX and compete with newer entries such as the BMW X1.
