Fresh details about the upcoming Fiat 500X

Fiat's 500 lineup is about to grow in the near future as a fourth member will join the family. It will be the Mini Countryman-rivaling 500X that is expected to hit the market sometime next year. The baby SUV will have an increased ground clearance, chunky wheel arch cladding, and it will be offered with a choice of a FWD or an AWD setup.

Even though it will look considerably more masculine in comparison to other models from the 500 lineup, the upcoming 500X will still borrow some familiar styling cues, like the looks of the headlamps and taillights, along with the chrome badge.

The Fiat 500X will be based on a widened version of the Punto hatchback platform, just like the 500L, so we should expect to see just about the same size as the MPV model (over 4m long). Inside the cabin it will be able to host five adults while the cargo room will be of more than 400 liters. This load capacity might be a little bit lower on the models fitted with the all-wheel drive layout.

Under the hood it will get the same engines as the aforementioned 500L so expect to see a 1.4-liter TwinAir gasoline unit with 93 hp (69 kW / 94 PS) for the entry-level model with the FWD configuration. Another engine choice will most likely be the 2-cylinder, 1.0-liter unit with 104 hp (77 kW / 105 PS), along with several Multijet diesel engines as well.

Chances are that we'll see a concept of the Fiat 500X in September at the Paris Motor Show. This will probably be a near-production version that will preview the car arriving in showrooms in 2013.
