At the upcoming Paris Motor Show in September, BMW will bring the first front-wheel drive model in its history, the 1-Series GT. This car is based on the same platform as the next-gen MINI, which is scheduled to go on sale in 2013. It is considered as being a more practical alternative of the 1-Series hatchback that also promises to be more economical to run.
To differentiate it from the hatchback and the new MINI, the 1-Series GT will have a more compact MPV-style appearance, in some ways similar to the new generation Mercedes B-Class. The new platform is a bit larger and lighter compared to the current Mini, while the car will provide an elevated driving position. In the new MINI, the driver will sit lower for a more sporty feel.
Both BMW and MINIare going to offer 3- and 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines for the front-wheel drive cars, but the BMW badged version will be a bit more powerful with a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter diesel unit with more than 100hp proping up the line-up.
Further powertrain options will include a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter and 4-cylinder 2.0-liter gasoline engines, along with the aforementioned diesel unit and a bigger 4-cylinder 2.0-liter diesel. The 1-Series GT will send the power to the wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
The BMW 1-Series GT is scheduled to hit the dealerships sometime in 2013. This model will be followed by hybrid and electric versions of the 1-Series.
