As part of London 2012 Olympic celebrations, famous Italian design firm Pininfarina has announced it will be displaying an exhibition to showcase Italian design ranging in scope from interior design and architecture to nautical design and aviation.
On display will be iconic objects such as the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch, the Coca-Cola beverage dispenser, the Lavazza Firma coffee machine, the Calligaris Orbital table as well as four 1:10 scale wooden sculptures, two of which are the 2005 Birdcage and 2012 Cambiano. A Ferrari FF and a Maserati GranTurismo will also greet visitors at the exhibition's entrance.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is the world debut of the urban public transport Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system developed in collaboration with Korean firm, Vectus, who specializes in urban mobility solutions. The PRT concept is based on a system of small, light and driverless vehicles, which navigate on a network of interconnecting tracks. Passengers are carried from one point to another on demand, without intermittent stops, thus, optimizing travel time. A 1:18 scale model of the vehicle will be on display.
"London has a vitality that few cities can boast," says company Chairman Paolo Pininfarina. "This year the city will be at the centre of the world because of the Olympics and thousands of collateral events. This exhibition, which is organised with the full support and active participation of the Italian Embassy in the UK, is an opportunity for us to represent Italian Design at a magical time for the city, for its inhabitants and for the millions of people who will visit it in this period."
