Although BMW might never use the trademarks, in an attempt to protect from competitors or preserve for future use, the list does give some insight into the direction BMW will take with its model range.
The BMW super sleuths at e90post.com have uncovered a long list of BMW model names trademarked over the past two years. Although BMW might never use the trademarks, in an attempt to protect from competitors or preserve for future use, the list does give some insight into the direction BMW will take with its model range. Here is the list:
- X2, X4
- M1, M2, M7, M10
- 2 Series
- 2 Series Active Tourer
- M35, M40, M55, M300, M350, M400, M500
- M130, M135, M140, M230, M235, M240, M330, M335, M340, M430, M435, M440, M450, M550, M650, M750
- Compactive, Compactive Tourer, Gran Tourer, Urbanic
- E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E8, E9
- i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8, i9
- GC, Gran Coupe, BMW Gran Coupe, 6er Gran Coupe
- SportMode, CoolMode, Air Collar, BMW Turbotec, Drive eCharged, LifeDrive, i Pedelec
- Corniche, Shadow, Wraith, Cloud, Dawn
Following the success of the X6 SAV and the confirmation of the X4, which is due in 2014, it comes as no surpise BMW could take the range further down market for an X2 version to plug the last hole in the X model range.
The proliferation of the new 2-Series range, which we already know will be positioned to replace the 1-Series coupe and convertible, could also include an M2 and Gran Coupe variant, but perhaps somewhat suprising is the inclusion of a 2-Series Active Tourer crossover utility type.
Of particular interest is the M10 badge which indicates a new halo model could be on the way. Recent favorable comments by BMW brass suggest the M7 could be closer to reality than we think, although the rumors of a full-fledged M model 7-Series have persisted for years.
The list also gives insight into how aggressively BMW wishes to grow its new M Performance Automobiles range. While the M300 and M400 models would slot just below the next generation M3 sedan (F80) / M4 coupe (F82) in the same manner the M550d compliments the M5, the M35, M40 and M55 names would be M Performance Automobile models for X and Z cars.
In addition to names for new technologies such as CoolMode and LifeDrive as well as an "i" brand electric bicycle, the "Compactive, Compactive Tourer, Gran Tourer, Urbanic" names will be applied to the new front-wheel drive models set to be launched starting next year.
