The Audi R8 e-tron is scheduled to be launched later this year and the company has announced the car will feature "synthetic" engine noises.

Created so pedestrians can hear the nearly silent electric vehicle, the model will have a carefully crafted ‘engine noise' that promises to be "well-rounded and harmonious." The system will measure the electric motor's rotational speed to determine which noises to produce. The sound is then played through a loudspeaker that is attached to the R8's undercarriage.

While creating the sound was rather complex, Dr. Ralf Kunkel said "Because we here at Audi are all automotive experts, we have a great advantage over sound specialists elsewhere. We know our vehicles inside and out, not to mention how they operate and behave."
