2013 SRT Viper GTS-R surprises New York, returning to ALMS [video]

SRT has confirmed the Viper will be returning to the American Le Mans Series with the unveiling of the Viper GTS-R at the New York Auto Show today. The new race car has surprisingly joined the street legal version that has arguably stole the show.

The factory backed SRT Viper Racing team will be running the two identical SRT Viper GTS-Rs in the production-based GT class. Rivals will include the Aston Martin Vantage, BMW M3 GT, Corvette C6.R, Ferrari F458 Italia, Lotus Evora and Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.

Technical details are being kept under wraps for now, however, the production model's 8.4-liter V10 engine produces 640 hp (477 kW / 649 PS) which exceeds the regulations of the ALMS GT-class. We should be expecting a figure of between 450 and 500 ponies when it arrives on the racetrack.

Development which is still ongoing has been conducted in partnership with Riley Technologies and the race cars will make their track debut in the summer.
