Volkswagen has followed up their Cross Coupe Concept from the Tokyo Motor Show with a new version that features a super frugal powertrain.

The VW Cross Coupe TDI Plug-In Concept now gets a turbodiesel direct injection engine (TDI) that works alongside two electric motors. It translates into fuel economy figures that are reported to be 1.8 liters/km (130 mpg US /156 mpg UK) and CO2 emissions of 46g/km.

There is no evidence that any power has been sacrificed in the search for more economy as the combined powertrain generates 306 PS (225 kW / 302 hp) and can hit a top speed of 220 kph (137 mph).

Volkswagen's latest concept will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in a couple of days time.
