The new Mercedes E-Class was expected to be getting a facelift for the 2014 model year so these prototypes that are clearly testing the mid-cycle upgrades come somewhat as a surprise.

The thick camouflage over the front end suggests the fascia is getting quite a heavy update. The headlights, grille and bumper look like they've been restyled. Rumors suggest this style could be inspired by the new generation A-Class.

The rear on the other hand could be another story. Our spies have caught prototypes in both sedan and estate form and neither have anything to protect their rear-end styling from prying eyes. It suggests that the styling will remain unchanged, however it may be more likely that these prototypes are yet to sport the changes.

The technical upgrades under the skin are still open to speculation, but we'll keep you posted on any rumors that surface on the webosphere.
