Nissan has announced plans to introduce the Common Module Family (CMF) architecture in 2013.

As the name implies, the platform is modular to increase commonality across the company's lineup. This will reduce costs and result in several vehicles being built on the same platform.

According to Nissan, the CMF architecture will have four modules: the engine compartment, cockpit, front underbody and rear underbody. Each model will use different modules, depending on which type of vehicle is being built.

Little else is known about the platform, but Nissan says it is flexible enough to underpin everything from small compacts to large sedans and crossovers.
