Hybrid technology has hit the B-segment for the first time with the release of the initial pictures and details for the 2012 Toyota Yaris Hybrid following yesterday's spy photos.

In order for the system to work fully with the smaller model, the Japanese automotive giant had to downsize their full hybrid powertrain, Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD). It works alongside a new 1.5 litre petrol engine and is 20 percent lighter than the full sized unit used in the Auris Hybrid. Combined power output is rated at 100PS (98hp/73kW) which confirms the downsized HSD has not been hindered in this area, however conclusions cannot be drawn until the final fuel economy figures are released.

The Yaris Hybrid has received a large styling overhaul with a completely redesigned front and rear fascias. In fact, the front fascia is described as the new design face of the Toyota brand. "It combines a new, more assertive Under Priority trapezoid opening frontal design element with the Keen Look design implemented on the front lamps."
