Ahead of its planned unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show that begins early next month, General Motors has revealed the first pictures and details for the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS.

The power and character of the new model stems from the Ecotec 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, and it packs a respectable 138hp ( 103kW / 136PS ) and 200Nm (148 lb.-ft.) of torque. General Motors is quick to point out that the new Sonic RS is the only vehicle in its segment to offer turbocharged power.

"The new Chevrolet Sonic RS pushes Chevrolet's performance heritage in a new direction, for a new generation of drivers," said Chris Perry, vice president of Global Chevrolet Marketing. "It takes the Sonic's great design and latest connectivity features and combines them with a more performance-oriented look and feel."

Aside from the engine upgrade, the Sonic RS features a number of exterior updates that help beef up the model's aggression. The front fascia features redesigned fog lights with an RS specific grille whilst the rear end gets a new fascia complete with a spoiler. The exterior look ends with a set of 17-inch wheels sporting a unique design and additional RS badging. A choice of 4 exterior colors will be made available at launch: Victory Red, Summit White, Cyber Gray Metallic and Black Granite Metallic.

Inside the cabin, the RS is treated to a new sports steering wheel a thicker rim and racing-inspired flat-bottom design, new aluminium sports pedals and sports seats.

Following its debut, the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS will go on sale in late 2012.
