General Motors has revealed the first details of an all-new high-performance 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will debut in the 2013 Cadillac ATS next month at the Detroit Motor Show.
The direct-injection power unit boasts an impressive 270hp ( 201kW / 273 PS) and 353 Nm (260 lb-ft. ) of torque . With power-density rated at 135hp (100 kW /136 PS) per liter, it makes this power unit one of the best performing engines in its class. General Motors has compared the ATS 2.0-liter turbo to its key competitors: the Audi A4 2.0L turbo (105.5 hp/L), BMW M3 V-8 (103.5 hp/L), Lexus IS F V-8 (83.2 hp/L) and Mercedes-Benz C250 1.8L turbo (111.6 hp/L).
The unit has been developed with a low-friction design and 90 percent of the peak torque is available from as low as 1,500 rpm giving the new ATS a good thrust at low and high speeds.
"This engine is the perfect match for the new ATS, which will be a refined performance luxury sedan," said Don Butler, Cadillac vice president of Global Marketing. "The 2.0T has an exceptionally smooth and responsive power curve that will make the ATS nimble, quick and fun to drive."
The new engine also features a number of highlights, these include:
- Direct-injection twin-cam, four-valve-per-cylinder engine with continuously variable valve timing
- Twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler
- Forged-steel crankshaft with modular balance shaft system
- Two-stage variable-displacement oil pump with jet-spray piston cooling.
The new 2013 Cadillac ATS will also benefit from two further engine options. These are a naturally aspirated 2.5L four cylinder engine and a 3.6L V-6 engine.
