Volkswagen will unveil a new all-electric concept at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show next month.

The "pure concept" as Volkswagen describes it will not be based on any production vehicle. It will feature a unique design although we'll be able to recognise some Beetle-esque styling cues that they hope will give it a friendly and familiar feel. But make no mistake, this will not be an electric Beetle.

The German automotive powerhouse will also use the Detroit show to unveil the Jetta Hybrid to the world's media, VW's answer to the Toyota Prius. The new model will be powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, but there are no confirmed details on power and performance specs at this time.

The VW Jetta Hybrid will hit showrooms in November 2012.
