2013 Dodge Dart will have 9-speed automatic trans enabling 40 mpg

In an interview with Reuters on Tuesday Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne revealed the all-new Dodge Dart compact sedan will achieve 40 mpg (48 mpg-UK; 5.8L/100km) thanks to a new 9-speed automatic transmission.

Available at launch will be the Fiat-sourced 6-speed TCT (Twin Clutch Transmission) front-wheel-drive transmission, but in 2013 the new 9-speed transmission built in South Carolina by ZF Group will be available. ZF states the 9-speed transmission will increase the Dart's fuel efficiency by an additional 10 to 16 percent over the TCT.

The 2013 Dart will be available with Chrysler's 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter Tigershark engines in addition Fiat's 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine that also powers the Fiat 500 and Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

As per the 2009 agreement that enabled Chrysler to emerge from bankruptcy protection, the certification of a 40 mpg vehicle built in the U.S., would allow Fiat SpA to acquire the final 5 percent of Chrysler Group stock. Such an event would give the Italian automaker a total of 58.5 percent ownership.
