General Motors has announced plans to develop a new family of Ecotec engines.

Designed for global use, the three- and four-cylinder units will displace between 1.0- and 1.5-liters. They will feature direct injection, a turbocharger and alternative fuel compatibility. There's no word on specifications, but GM says the engines will deliver increased fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.

If everything goes according to plan, the new Ecotec engines will go into production by mid-decade.
