Our spy photographers have managed to catch several new images of Subaru's version of the Toyota FT-86.

Undergoing hot-weather testing in the American desert, the prototype is a hodgepodge of duct tape, camouflage, and spare parts. While this makes it hard to determine what the production model will look like, previous renderings have suggested it will be rather striking.

As you may recall, the coupe will ride on a shortened version of the Legacy platform with the rear suspension from the Impreza. While the FT-86 will feature a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter boxer engine, the Subaru model is tipped to use a 2.0-liter turbo with 260 hp (194 kW / 264 PS). It will be paired to a six-speed transmission and rear-wheel drive (due to cost issues, all-wheel drive has been axed).

The car is expected go on sale in 2013 with a base price of at least $25,000.
