An Edgier Look

Ford has introduced a new model in its Edge range, called the Edge Sport, at the Chicago Motor Show. This model is more of an accounting and marketing after thought than outright performance exercise though. You see, the Edge is the best-selling mid-size crossover in the US and, according to Ford, the after market customisation business has grown to be a $40 billion annual business.

So the guys at Ford reckon that they’ll simply offer a customization kit straight from the factory and cash in on the wave of popularity being currently enjoyed by crossovers, it is the fastest growing vehicle segment in the US at the moment. For those that want their Ford Edge a little edgier, this is definitely the ticket. The Edge Sport rides on standard 20- or optional 22-inch wheels and low profile tires. The Sport model also features an eight-piece Edge Sport body kit, which includes a unique front air dam, side skirts, lower door caps and a rear skirt. All of these enhancements are finished in body colour.

Highlights from the interior include contrasting, light gray stitching on the seats, steering wheel and shift knob. There is apparently also an etched metal effect on the instrument panel center console. Executives at the blue oval seem optimistic about their decision to add the Edge Sport to the range, with Mark Fields, President of the Americas at Ford, describing the exercise as smart business.
