Check out these sweet pics and details of Steve Saleen's latest Mustang. The story inside.
Well known racing driver and tuner Steve Saleen's SMS Signature Series will see the release of the second vehicle in a trilogy of American supercars. The 2011 SMS 302 Mustang follows the release of the group's 2010 SMS 570 Challenger, and it looks pretty hot.
The car was introduced last week, marking the 46th birthday of the Ford Mustang. The tuned version features two different powerplants, including a 440 horsepower (328 kW / 446 PS) 5.0-liter V8 that knocks out a mammoth 542 Nm (400 ft-lb) of torque. This gives the car a 0-60 mph sprint time of 4.5 seconds, with a 13.5s quarter mile time.
Step up and get the car with a supercharger, and you'll see a noticeable power change. Though the 60 mph sprint shrinks just 0.2 seconds, a full 1.4 seconds is cut from the quarter mile time. With the supercharger, the car gets 535 hp (399 kW / 542 PS) and up to 609 Nm (450 ft-lb). Whatever vehicle is chosen, the customer will be able to choose between a TR3650 six-speed manual, or a six-speed automatic transmission.
"Many automotive enthusiasts have embraced our SMS 570 Challenger, but I know our core fans have been waiting for the first Mustang to come from the new company, SMS Supercars," said Saleen. "Our line of SMS Mustangs will be the only Mustangs authorized to bear my name, to use the benefit of my heritage and to incorporate performance innovations derived from my over thirty years of racing and manufacturing experience."
The car includes a high performance suspension, and alloy wheels measuring 20"x9" up front and 20"x10" in back. Wheels are wrapped in Pirelli PZero high performance tires. Extensive visual changes can be seen at the front fascia, side skirts, and at the back, where a new rear diffuser sports an F1 rain light. Inside, Alcantara, leather, and aluminum will be noticed.
