Designed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MX-5/Miata, the roadster features sporty styling and a major reduction in weight.

Mazda has officially unveiled the MX-5 Superlight Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Designed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MX-5/Miata, the roadster features sporty styling and a major reduction in weight (it's only 2,195 lbs / 995 kg). To keep the Superlight true to its name, the company removed the windshield, the retractable top and everything associated with them (windshield wipers... etc). Other design tweaks include an aerodynamic body kit, a Mazdaspeed dual exhaust system, and two integrated air scoops that serve as roll-over bars.

Unfortunately, Mazda decided to waste the weight saving by equipping the Superlight Concept with an underpowered 1.8-liter petrol engine with 93 kW (126 PS) and 167 Nm of torque. The results are predictable, 0-100 km/h takes 8.9 seconds and combined fuel consumption is an estimated 6.3L/100km (37.3 mpg).
