Toyota is emphasizing the electric side of its Hybrid Drive Synergy (HDS) technology by allowing the plug-in Prius to act like a conventional electric vehicle (EV) and operate on pure electric power for short-range day-to-day transportation.

Joining the Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept on stage at the Frankfurt Motor Show this month is the Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept.

What sets this Prius concept apart from the 2009 Prius available in showrooms is its "plug-in" capability.  Toyota is emphasizing the electric side of its Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) technology by allowing the plug-in Prius to act like a conventional electric vehicle (EV) and operate on pure electric power for short-range day-to-day transportation.

Toyota states an extensive field trial in Europe will begin in early 2010.  Over 150 units will be leased to select fleet customers.

No specific details regarding range or fuel efficiency have been released yet.  We will have to wait until its debut in Frankfurt on September 15th.
