He has been charged with filing a false police report after the incident, which allegedly followed a drink and drug-fuelled, two-day bender.

Lapo Elkann, heir to the Fiat empire, was arrested in New York last weekend after faking his own kidnapping.

39-year-old Elkann, who is the grandson of Fiat’s legendary head Gianni Agnelli, apparently flew into New York last Thursday and embarked on a two-day bender with an escort.

A source quoted by The Daily Beast alleges that Elkann and his companion consumed alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine until they ran out of cash.

Elkann is then alleged to have contacted his family claiming to have been kidnapped, asking for a $10,000 ransom to be paid. The family then contacted the New York Police Department, which launched an investigation into the supposed “false imprisonment”. Elkann and the escort went to collect the money, at which point they were arrested.

Elkann was charged with filing a false police report and given a desk appearance ticket. The NYPD said the escort’s arrest was voided and sealed.

This is not the first time Elkann, who runs sunglasses company Italia Independent and car customizer Garage Italia, has got into this kind of trouble. Shortly after his grandfather’s death in 2005, he almost died from a cocaine overdose in the red light district of Turin. In 2013 he was robbed of jewellery worth around 3.5 million ($3.7 million), as well.
